Proofreading and Copyediting Options

(Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, Professional Practice Code)

Level 1

Technical editing:-

Non-intrusive copyediting such as spelling, grammar and punctuation. Inconsistencies will nevertheless be highlighted and dealt with.

Level 2

Structural/stylistic editing:-

More intervention in language and phrasing may take place.

It can often apply if multi-author works when the presentation may be uneven.

In addition to Level 1 copyediting. The client will have agreed that the text requires structural intervention for clarity and flow.

This constitutes rephrasing as opposed to rewriting.

Substantive/developemental editing:-

The client will have agreed that reconstruction and rewriting are necessary to adapt the text for the desired market. This is in addition to Level 1 copyediting.

PLEASE NOTE - The copyeditor is not necessarily an experienced writer and the client is the primary information provider.

The CIEP Code subdivides copyediting into three levels, set out below, but acknowledges that a combination of levels may be appropriate for certain types of work.
