Level 1
Technical editing:-
Non-intrusive copyediting such as spelling, grammar and punctuation. Inconsistencies will nevertheless be highlighted and dealt with.
Level 2
Structural/stylistic editing:-
More intervention in language and phrasing may take place.
It can often apply if multi-author works when the presentation may be uneven.
In addition to Level 1 copyediting. The client will have agreed that the text requires structural intervention for clarity and flow.
This constitutes rephrasing as opposed to rewriting.
Substantive/developemental editing:-
The client will have agreed that reconstruction and rewriting are necessary to adapt the text for the desired market. This is in addition to Level 1 copyediting.
PLEASE NOTE - The copyeditor is not necessarily an experienced writer and the client is the primary information provider.
The CIEP Code subdivides copyediting into three levels, set out below, but acknowledges that a combination of levels may be appropriate for certain types of work.
